West Dunbartonshire CVS, Community & Volunteering Services

CENSUS 2011 >

The West Dunbartonshire CVS Census collects vital information on the current health and activity of the volunteering and third sector in West Dunbartonshire.

It takes place every 2 years and gathers the full range of information needed to help us plan and provide future support services, around funding, charity regulation and training to volunteers and the wider voluntary sector alike. This data can also be used by local organisations and groups as supporting material for planning and application purposes. Through this, we can help improve the communities of West Dunbartonshire.

Every organisation should try to be included in a census which will start to be collected in September 2011 finishing in December 2011. All information provided by individual groups well be treated as confidential and is protected by the Data Protection Act 1998. Only aggregated information will be published in the Census report.

Why do we have a census?
Census results are used by West Dunbartonshire CVS in many ways, influencing, and lobbying on your behalf. Previous census results have helped influence:

Three year service delivery funding streams from the local authority
Identification of gaps in current services provision
Funders to identify West Dunbartonshire as a target area.

Also, the Census shows in black and white the financial and social worth of the range reach and impact of the sector. At the last count in West Dunbartonshire

FACT: Community and Volunteering activity is worth £44,797.000
FACT: 9,000 regular volunteers contributing over 45,000 hours of time per week

Do I have to fill in the census questionnaire?
By taking part in the census, organisations have an opportunity to influence how, and importantly what type of support is offered in the coming years. If you don’t take part then your volunteers and your organisations needs may not be met. The tighter financial climate makes this all the more important if we want the sector to flourish and grow.

How is the questionnaire completed?
Simple, a member of the Census team will call you to make a telephone appointment giving you a unique reference number for your security. We will then call you back when the time suits you quoting your unique reference number and complete the questionnaire together. You will not need to worry about paper work or postage.

Who should fill in the questionnaire?
It is important that your organisation identifies the person best placed to answer though they should be given all of the necessary information by other committee members. The questionnaire asks for details about organisations that are usually active in West Dunbartonshire, including Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven.

What information will I need when your team calls?
It all depends on the size of your organisation, the numbers of volunteers and or staff and the rage of things you do. When we call to make an appointment we’ll discuss your requirements to make sure your prepared and that we don’t take up your time again. Basic things to remember...numbers of volunteers (even your committee) and staff if you have any, financial turnover, main contacts, contact address, charity number and the area that you are active in

When will the questionnaire be completed?
The questionnaire should be completed between 1st September 2011 and 6th December 2011. It shouldn’t take long. We will also try to be as flexible as possible to enable as many organisations to participate; we know that many of you will not be available to talk during the day so we have evening call centre sessions each week from September through to December.

Financial Information, why?
It is critical that we can reflect the economic worth of the local sector, you will NOT be asked for bank details other than the type of account you have, your annual turnover and the name of the Bank. If you are asked for your bank address or account number please hang up immediately and call us on 0141 941 0886 and ask for the Census Director.

Is our information protected?
Yes. Your organisation information is protected by law. We do not share or publish information that would allow you, or your organisation, to be identified. Your details are kept securely and confidential and are protected by the Data Protection Act 1998.
