First Aid

There are many occasions when people are injured or take ill, would you know what to do?  At this point, immediate attention could be critical for the injured or unwell person. WDCVS offers Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid Awareness courses throughout the year. Both courses are competitively priced for Third Sector organisations and community groups.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) | 6 hrs

This course meets the legal requirement of having  a trained and qualified First Aider in the workplace.

The EFAW course lasts 6 hours and covers the actions to take in an emergency; responsibilities and reporting; recovery position; CPR; controlling bleeding; choking; minor burns; basic hygiene; seizures and shock. Certification is valid for 3 years and requires the completion of both written and practical activities. We will work to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate if you have an injury or condition that might affect your ability to do the practical work, please speak to us about this when booking.

WDCVS is a First Aid Industry Body approved training centre for Emergency First Aid at Work.

Basic First Aid Awareness | 1.5 hrs

Our Awareness course will give you a basic introduction to First Aid. This course is not certified, but will help you to be more confident in using your skills should you find yourself in an emergency situation.

Bespoke Training

WDCVS can develop bespoke first aid awareness training to meet your organisations needs. This can delivered in our training room or at your organisation. These can include CPR, and any particular issues specific to your organisation. Please contact for pricing.

Being First Aid Compliant

Organisations with employees have a legal duty to ensure they have:

• Registered with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
• Carried out an assessment of their first aid needs.

The assessment will identify how much first aid provision you need. What you should provide will depend on the size of the organisation and what type of activities you run.

At very least, you must provide:

• One first aid box
• An appointed person (First Aider).
• A notice to tell staff the location of the first aid box and the name of the appointed person.

The appointed person should have the basic first aid skills to take charge in an emergency. You should allow them to undertake any relevant first aid training or re-qualification. To cover shifts patterns and staff absence you may need more than one appointed person.

Organisations with no staff are not bound by these regulations. But, it is still recommended to carry out a first aid needs assessment. This will help you to identify and minimise any risks. It can also help you prove the reasonable actions you have taken in the unlikely event of legal action against you.

You can find more information on compliance at the Health & Safety Executive

How many First Aiders should my organisation have?

That question depends on issues such as what your organisation does, is it open to members of the public, etc.

To calculate how many First Aiders you need, try the St Andrew’s First Aid calculator.

Do I need to have any previous training or knowledge?

No, you do not need to have any previous First Aid training or knowledge to take part in either course.

Do I need to sit an exam?

The First Aid Awareness course has no assessment and a certificate of attendance will be issued to everyone.

The Emergency First-Aid at Work course is certified for 3 years and you will have to be able to perform CPR on the floor, undertake other practical work and pass the short question and answer assessment before being presented with the valid certificate. We will work to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate if you have an injury or condition that might affect your ability to do the practical work.
